Lisbon's main boulevard is the city's version of Paris' Champs Elysées. It's a tree-lined avenue with cobbled mosaics connecting Praça dos Restauradores to Praça do Marquês de Pombal, and known for its luxury stores (which actually start on Rua Castilho to the north and continue down the avenue). This is also a theater district and home to several elegant buildings, although many of them were torn down for newer constructions in the mid-20th century. However, some attractive and prize-winning architecture remains. Going up the hill to the east (with the help of the Lavra Funicular), you reach Pena, a more traditional neighborhood where the famous Fado singer Amalia Rodrigues was born, and where there's a little-known viewpoint, the Miradouro do Torel.
